Russia fines Google unprecedented amount

News

Russia is reportedly demanding a staggering penalty from Google for its refusal to unblock several pro-Russian YouTube channels, with the fines now amounting to more than 2 undecillion rubles – a figure with a near-unimaginable 36 zeroes following the initial “2.”

This extraordinary sum translates to around $20 decillion, or approximately $20 billion trillion trillion, a figure that vastly overshadows the entire global economy.

For perspective, the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is estimated at $110 trillion, according to the International Monetary Fund. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, holds a market value of around $2 trillion, making the Kremlin’s demands appear all the more symbolic.

Russian court orders unblocking of YouTube accounts

Earlier this week, Russian state media outlet TASS reported that a Russian court had ordered Google to restore the blocked YouTube channels – which were initially restricted in 2022 – or face escalating fines that double weekly. Responding to the massive fine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the sum was difficult to even articulate, describing it as “filled with symbolism.” He added Google “should not be restricting the actions of our broadcasters on its platform.”

Google has not provided a specific comment on this case but recently referenced “ongoing legal matters” in Russia, linked to disputes over account terminations, including those related to sanctioned entities. In its latest earnings report, the tech giant expressed confidence these issues would not significantly impact its financial health.

Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Google curtailed most of its operations in Russia, although it stopped short of a complete withdrawal, unlike some other American tech firms. Services such as YouTube and Google Search remain available in Russia. However, Google’s local subsidiary filed for bankruptcy months after the invasion, following the government’s seizure of its bank accounts and the subsequent suspension of its commercial activities in the country.
