An Egyptian migrant has returned to Italy due to “vulnerability” concerns, Italian activists and lawmakers reported on Saturday. He was among eight individuals sent to an Albanian processing centre after being intercepted at sea.
The man, diagnosed with psychological issues, was unable to stay at the Gjadër reception center, a representative explained. Seven migrants — five from Bangladesh and two from Egypt — remain in Albania following this repatriation.
This case marks the second group transfer since two processing centers in Albania began operations in October, under a new agreement between Italy and Albania. Human rights groups and Mediterranean-based NGOs have criticized the deal, claiming it could set a dangerous precedent and potentially violates international law.
Under the agreement, up to 3,000 migrants intercepted by the Italian coast guard in international waters each month can be processed in Albania. Those granted asylum are allowed entry to Italy, while rejected applicants face deportation directly from Albania.
