Sharon Verzeni - a man has confessed to her murder.

Man arrested in Sharon Verzeni murder case

News

On the night between Thursday and Friday, police arrested a 31-year-old Italian man suspected of murdering Sharon Verzeni near Bergamo on 29-30 July.

Bergamo prosecutor Maria Cristina Rota confirmed Friday the suspect had confessed to the murder. “Tonight, at the end of a very intense investigation, we were able to identify the man on the bicycle,” said Rota, referring to the individual seen on security footage fleeing the crime scene.

The suspect, identified as Moussa Sangare, reportedly “fully confessed” to killing Verzeni when questioned. According to investigative sources, Sangare, who was born in Italy to parents from the Ivory Coast, claimed he had a “sudden raptus” and did not know the victim. “I can’t explain why it happened, I saw her and killed her,” Sangare allegedly told police.

Born in Milan, Sangare, 31, is unemployed and resides in Suisio, a town close to Terno d’Isola, where the murder occurred. Prosecutors have requested his arrest due to concerns that he might commit another crime, destroy evidence, or flee. The Carabinieri examined surveillance footage from the area to identify him.

Motive-less crime

The stabbing appeared to have no clear motive. Investigators stated it was not related to a rape attempt, robbery, drugs, or the Scientology courses Verzeni allegedly attended.

Verzeni’s boyfriend, Sergio Ruocco, had been questioned multiple times but was not placed under investigation. He is now living with Verzeni’s family, who have always believed she was murdered by a stranger.

Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the League party, reacted to the arrest on social media. “Moussa Sangare detained, North African origins and Italian citizenship, suspected of having killed poor Sharon,” he wrote. “I hope light will be shed as soon as possible and, in case he is guilty, an exemplary sentence, without leniency. Congratulations to the Carabinieri!” concluded Salvini.

It’s funny how Salvini is not so vocal when women are murdered by men Italian born and of Italian origins. Italy’s femicide and domestic abuse rates remain alarmingly high.
