It’s not been the easiest of years for the travel and tourism industry. This is why the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice® Best of the Best Awards for Hotels is such a boost. Italy did well topping one list and making the top 25 best hotels in the world, not once but twice.
Other good news from Tripadvisor’s annual survey is nearly half (45%) the Americans who responded plan to travel internationally. Plus, 64% are planning to stay in a hotel.
Millions of reviews
Every year, Tripadvisor combs through the millions of reviews from its global community of travellers to surface the hotels that people raved about most. This year is no different.
“As the world gears up for a busier summer travel season, Tripadvisor’s highly coveted Best of the Best Awards are here to help people discover spectacular places to stay as they start planning their long-awaited next trip,” said Lindsay Nelson, chief experience and brand officer at Tripadvisor. “From tropical bungalows in the Caribbean to scenic safari lodges in Africa, this year’s winners span six continents and 83 countries — plenty of options to cover any type of trip travellers are craving.”
New year, new categories
In addition to the much-loved categories of hotels and B&Bs that Tripadvisor typically awards, an exciting change for 2021 includes the introduction of four brand-new categories.
New this year are the Hottest New Hotels (properties that opened in July 2019 or later), Top Rooftop Hotels, Safari Stays and Picture-Perfect Hotels (properties with gorgeous photos on Tripadvisor).
Italian hotel is Tripadvisor’s Best Small Hotel
The Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco on Capri has a perfect 5 score. Built in 1906 on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa, it was the chosen refuge of artists, intellectuals and all those looking for an exclusive hideaway.
In 2006 it underwent a complete restoration. The renovation transformed the building into a boutique hotel. There visitors can experience the traditional hospitality of Capri’s most elegant villas.
To qualify as a small hotel, the establishment must have under 30 rooms. The Excelsior Parco’s eleven rooms offer elegance and beautiful views across the Bay of Naples.
The hotel has been a Best of the Best winner since2012. And as their website states, their motto is “Our guests deserve the best holiday in Capri”.
Two in the Top 25 Hotels in the World
In eight place is Hotel Gardena Grodnerhof in the Dolomites. Their website describes the hotel as follows. “In the centre of Ortisei and surrounded by a spacious 2000 m² garden, the Gardena Grödnerhof Gourmet & Spa Hotel is the ideal place for relaxing and revitalising vacations, dedicated to well-being and absolute comfort.”
A Tripadvisor review from July 2020, said: “The hotel is fantastic. Family owned and operated, service is exceptional, facilities are great and location perfect. It complements for a fantastic experience. Our first holidays post lockdown and it couldn’t have been better.”
16th place on the Best of Best Hotels in the World went to another family hotel in the Dolomites, Hotel Ambiez Family & Wellness. The focus really is on family with mini-clubs and play areas, as well as a spa for the adults. A Tripadvisor review from May 2021 (trans from Italian) said: “Perfect place to go with children, the staff makes you feel at home right away, and the services are just perfect. We ate divinely. The facility is very clean and truly holiday-friendly.”
In the Best of the Best Top Rooftop Hotels category, Italy again did well with three in the top 25. Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco was the highest placed in 4th, with Singer Palace Hotel in Rome in 9th and Hotel Calimala, Florence in 13th.
Naturally, views are an all important factor for rooftop hotels and all three offer incredible vistas of the surrounding areas.
Picture perfect hotels
We all know Italy has some of the best scenery in the world. Therefore, it’s no surprise two of their hotels would feature in the Picture-Perfect Hotels category.
Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera is incredibly picturesque as you would expect from the hotel taking 3rd place in this category. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA. It faces the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches.
In 12th place was the Grand Hotel Tremezzo which sits on Lake Como next to Villa Carlotta’s famed gardens.
