Italian Canned Tomatoes Celebrate Global Success

Business News

Naples, 15 April 2025 – The canned tomatoes sector continues to shine as a Made in Italy success story worldwide. On the second National Made in Italy Day, ANICAV shared data confirming the tomato’s growing export success.

As migration spread Italian culture abroad, one staple travelled with it, the canned tomato. A symbol of national identity, it now reaches tables across the globe.

In 2024, exports of tomato derivatives rose by 6.5% in volume and 3.8% in value. The total export value reached €3billion.

Italy exported over 2.2 billion tonnes of canned tomato products. More than 64% were peeled tomatoes, pulp, or cherry tomatoes. Tomato purée, although a favourite at home, made up only 21% of exports.

Europe remained the top destination, accounting for more than 60% of export value. Germany, the UK, and France led the way. The United States ranked first for exports outside Europe, taking a 15% share. Japan remained a key market too, just behind the US.

“Our exports prove the world values our tomatoes,” said Marco Serafini, ANICAV President. “The quality of Italian-grown produce is unmatched. We pay our farmers the highest prices in the world. Our factories maintain top processing standards and product safety.”

He added that this excellence keeps Italian canned tomatoes ahead of international competitors.

US trade policy poses a risk

However, future US trade policy poses a risk.

“Trump’s economic policies have shaken global markets, including ours,” said ANICAV’s General Director, Giovanni De Angelis.

“The US is a strategic and growing market for us. New tariffs could raise customs duties to 32.5%, threatening our position.”

De Angelis warned these tariffs may encourage “Italian sounding” imitations, already widespread in America.

“Our profit margins can’t shrink any further; we’re at the limit. We hope the 90-day suspension allows for cautious but firm EU negotiations,” he said.

Who is ANICAV?

Founded in Naples in 1945, ANICAV represents the largest number of tomato-processing companies globally.

Its members process about 70% of Italy’s tomatoes and nearly all the peeled tomatoes worldwide. In 2024, ANICAV companies generated €3.9 billion in turnover, over 70% of the Italian sector’s total.

Around 60% of production goes abroad, making canned tomatoes true ambassadors of Made in Italy.
