French Open: Italian players into the second week

At the end of the first week, there were a single Italian man and two Italian women left in the main draw of the French Open. Play continues today.

Jannik Sinner’s flawless first-week record in Paris remains intact with a third successive year into the latter stages of the competition. On Saturday, he had a huge scare when playing against Mackenzie McDonald.

The Italian rallied from 2-5 down and saved 11 set points on his way to a 6-3, 7-6(6), 6-3 third-round triumph over the 60th-ranked American.

He faces Andrey Rublev in the fourth round tomorrow.

Italian women riding high

Heading into week two are No.28 seed Camila Giorgi and Martina Trevisan, winner of last week’s Grand Prix Sar La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Morocco.

The big-hitting No.28 seed, Giorgi, is through to the fourth round at Roland-Garros for the first time. Yesterday (28th May), the Italian rallied from a set deficit to beat No.7 seed Aryna Sabalenka 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

The victory marks Giorgi’s first top-10 win at a Slam since 2013 and her first ever top-10 win at Roland-Garros. It was also her first on clay since 2017. She will face Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, the No.20 seed, in the fourth round on Monday 30th May.

Today, 28-year-old Martina Trevisan, no.59 in the WTA rankings, faced the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the French Open fourth round. The Fiorentina won with a score of 7-6 (10), 7-5, in just under 2 hours.

Trevisan returns to the top eight of the second Slam of the season, after the feat of 2020, when she surprised the tennis world. Then, she started from the qualifications and stopping only in front of the future winner of the tournament, the Pole Iga Swiatek.

Next week, Trevisan will meet 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals.
