The French Open at Roland Garros started just under a week ago, and there is still an Italian presence in both the men’s and women’s singles competitions.

Yesterday (30th May), saw a lot of the Italian contingent in action at Roland Garros. It was not such a positive experience with many falling by the wayside.

Men’s singles

In the men’s competition, Maroszan, Cobol, Darderi and Fognini all fell to seeds, respectively, Dimitrov (10), Rune (13), Griekspoor (26) and Paul (14).

However, Musetti, seeded 30, saw off the popular French player Gael Monfils in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4. He will now face the no.1 seed Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Currently playing (at the time of writing) is Arnaldi who is facing no. 6 seed Andrey Rublev. Matteo has taken the first set against the Russian in a tie-break.

Playing later today is the no.2 seed Jannik Sinner, who is facing Kotov in the third round.

Women’s singles

Sara Errani lost to the no.22 seed Navaroo of the USA in the second round, 6-2, 7-5.

Jasmine Paolini, who is seeded 12 at Roland Garros, despatched Baptiste in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Paolini faces Canadian Bianca Andreescu in the third round.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto has already played and won her third round match, taking out no.17 seed Samsonova in straight sets 7-6, 6-2. In the fourth round, Cocciaretto faces no.3 see American Coco Gauff.
