Huge fire rages in Massarosa, Lucca – evacuations take place

Firefighters are tackling the forest fire which broke out in the hills of Massarosa, Lucca, late on Monday, July 18. The fire continues to burn into Wednesday July 20. 500 people have been evacuated.

The Italian fire authority Vigili del Fuoco has tweeted the situation regarding the fire in Lucca is improving, after wind caused some fronts of the fire to strengthen during the night.

“#Gorizia, the work of 27 #vigilidelfuoco continued during the night with 15 vehicles to combat the #firewoods on the Carso: from dawn 2 #canadair and a helicopter in action between the municipalities of Doberdò (GO) and Aurisina (TS). Situation improving [# 20j luglio 8:00]”

As can be seen from the video tweeted by Vigili del Fuoco, the fire was very intense. 500 people were evacuated as a precaution.

Regional President Eugenio Giani also tweeted: “During the night there were several explosions of LPG tanks and evacuations of houses threatened by flames, some fronts were reinforced by the wind. Operations continue unabated.”

The link road between Lucca and Viareggio has been closed.

The fire in Italy follows outbreaks of fire in Spain, Portugal, France and the UK.
