Istat released the employment figures for April today showing an increase of 48,000 over March. The number of people looking for work dropped by 14,000 in the same period.
The number of people in employment in Italy rose by 48,000 in April with respect to March, Istat said on today. Compared to the same month in 2022, employment figures increased by 390,000. Women were the driving force of the year-on-year increase.
The national statistics agency said 52,000 more women were in work in April than in March. That more than makes up for a 4,000 decrease in the number of men in employment.
It said women accounted for 217,000 of the year-on-year rise in the number of people in work here.
Overall employment at 61%
Istat said 23,446 million people were at work in Italy in April. This made the overall employment rate 61%.
The employment rate for women sits someway below the overall figure at 52.3% in April 2023. This was up by 0.3% on March and by 1.4% on the same month last year.
The agency said 33.6% of the working-age population were not active on the labour market. However, that includes people staying at home to care for children and relatives.
Italy’s unemployment rate was 7.8% in April, down 0.1%t on March and 0.4% on the same month last year, Istat said.
Furthermore, the number of people looking for work dropped by 14,000 with respect to March. That brings Italy’s unemployment figure to below the two million mark to 1.986 million.
