The upcoming G7 Culture Summit will feature events in Pompeii, according to the city’s Mayor, Carmine Lo Sapio.
Lo Sapio expressed his satisfaction with the plans to ANSA on Thursday. Unless weather conditions force a change, the G7 delegations are set to visit the excavations at Pompeii on 20th September. The visit will include a concert by the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti and a dinner at the Palestra Grande (Large Gymnasium).
A performance by Andrea Bocelli is also being considered, though it has not yet been confirmed.
Mayor Lo Sapio was briefed on Thursday morning about the security measures planned for the events. These will involve the local prefecture, the commissioner for public security, and the municipal police, among others.
There were initial doubts about holding events at Pompeii after an alleged advisor to former Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano, who lacked security clearance, claimed involvement in email exchanges containing confidential information about the G7 Culture Summit.
Sangiuliano resigned last Friday following the controversy surrounding Maria Rosaria Boccia, the disputed advisor for major events, including the G7 Culture Summit.
