Alberto Stasi, 41, was granted partial day release on Friday as he nears the end of a 16-year prison sentence. He was convicted in 2015 of murdering his girlfriend, 26-year-old economics graduate Chiara Poggi, in Garlasco near Pavia in 2007.

Stasi, then 24, was an economics student at Milan’s Bocconi University when he killed Poggi in August 2007.

Now a chartered accountant, Stasi will leave Bollate Prison daily for work and social reintegration activities. He must return each evening.

The Milan Surveillance Court said Stasi has always shown “empathy and suffering” towards Poggi, despite denying any responsibility. Judges noted his conduct has aligned with “acceptance of the definitive sentence” and justified the decision to grant semi-liberty.

Stasi has served over ten years of his 16-year sentence for Poggi’s murder.

A court report stated: “He has always shown suffering for Chiara Poggi, the girlfriend he was convicted of murdering.”

Last month, new evidence emerged in the case. DNA belonging to Andrea Sempio was reportedly found under Poggi’s fingernails. Sempio, 37, is a friend of Chiara Poggi’s brother Marco. He has now become a new suspect in the reopened investigation.

On 12 March, Stasi said he remains confident that justice will prevail and the truth will come out.

When ANSA contacted Poggi’s mother for her reaction, she replied: “We only feel, once again, so much bitterness.

We only hope to never meet him”.

Italy has a continuing issue with femicide, with two young women murdered within 48-hours of each other in March.
