Agcom issues X with €1.35million fine

Business News

Italy’s communications regulator Agcom has imposed a hefty fine of €1.35 million on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The fine relates to violation of national regulations prohibiting the advertising of games and betting, as reported by Il Sole 24 Ore.

Following an investigation, the watchdog confirmed the platform had allowed at least 20 profiles associated with betting activities from mid-2022 to the end of last summer. This is in contravention of the Dignity Decree, which imposes a comprehensive ban on almost all forms of gambling advertising.

Agcom levied the fine on Twitter International Unlimited Company, owner of X’s video sharing platform. The organisation issued the fine on 6th March.

According to the report, nine of the flagged accounts possessed a blue checkmark, indicating their subscription to X Premium, resulting in fines of €150,000 per profile. Agcom has previously penalised Google, YouTube, and Amazon’s Twitch for similar infringements of Italy’s stringent regulations concerning the promotion of gambling.
