10 probed over Florence black cube

More than ten people are under investigation over Florence black cube building. The controversial edifice replaced the former Teatro Comunale and has drawn criticism for its impact on the historic cityscape.

Local media report that prosecutors have issued formal summonses to those under investigation. Chief prosecutor Rosa Volpe is handling the case, which involves alleged unauthorised works, false official statements, and planning violations.

Investigators are examining the full authorisation process behind the redevelopment of the former theatre site. The area lies within Florence’s UNESCO World Heritage zone, where construction rules are particularly strict.

The Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza are leading the ‘black cube’ inquiry. Over the summer, they seized documents from the city’s urban planning offices and the heritage authority. Prosecutors are reviewing opinions issued by bodies including Florence’s landscape commission.

Sources say senior municipal officials and technical staff are among those under investigation. Prosecutors have released no names, and all suspects are presumed innocent under Italian law.

Civic group Salviamo Firenze per Viverci welcomed the investigation into the Florence black cube. It said the inquiry could clarify how the project received approval and renewed calls to halt similar developments. The Comune di Firenze has expressed confidence in the judiciary while the investigation continues.
