Carabinieri find 45 grammes of “frozen hashish”, the high-potency cannabis product which can fetch up to €80 a gramme, in the home of a convicted felon.
A new, higher-powered version of hashish has hit the Naples drug market, police said on Thursday, just 24 hours after a separate seizure of so-called “white hash” in the same area.
Carabinieri from the Giugliano in Campania company’s operations unit intercepted the new variant, known as “frozen hashish,” during an operation in Melito di Napoli. Some 45 grammes of the drug were found in the home of a convicted felon.
A cold-processed concentrate
Frozen hashish is a resin obtained through cold processing, a technique that preserves and concentrates the resin glands of the cannabis plant. The result is a product prized on the illegal market above all for its very high THC content — the active ingredient responsible for cannabis’s psychoactive effects.
It represents the latest step in a broader trend of drug processing aimed at achieving ever higher concentrations of THC, following on from products such as the “white hash” seized in Naples just a day earlier.
A costly new frontier
The price puts frozen hashish among the most expensive cannabis products on the illegal market, selling for up to €80 per gramme.
The find is not an isolated case. In recent months, a batch of frozen marijuana was also seized in Trento, suggesting the product is spreading beyond southern Italy. Investigators note that the trend must be viewed against the backdrop of a wider European cannabis market, where the potency of products in circulation has been steadily increasing.
