Liguria regional election – poll puts Bucci ahead

By Region News North-west Italy

In the Liguria regional election, turnout reached 45.94%, a drop from the 53.42% seen in the 2020 election, final figures revealed Monday. Early projections indicate centre-right candidate Marco Bucci is leading centre-left rival Andrea Orlando.

According to SWG’s projection for La7, Bucci holds 49% of the votes to Orlando’s 47.5% in the Liuria regional election. An Opinio poll for Rai shows Bucci ahead with 49.8% compared to Orlando’s 46.5%.

Bucci, currently serving his second term as Genoa’s mayor, faces Orlando, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party (PD) and a former environment and justice minister. The Liguria regional election is viewed as a crucial indicator for Italy’s national political landscape, with upcoming contests in Umbria and Emilia-Romagna scheduled for 17th-18th November. Premier Giorgia Meloni is counting on a victory in Liguria and a hold in Umbria to secure a 2-1 lead in these three key regions.

The elections are also a significant test for the centre-left’s broad alliance, which includes the PD, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), and other leftist and centrist groups. Former Liguria president Giovanni Toti resigned in July after facing corruption charges; he later agreed to a plea deal, which Italian law regards as subject to a judge’s approval and not an admission of guilt.
