The brief respite from the heat is over as temperatures climb again across central and southern Italy, with health risk alerts peaking on 28 August.
Italy’s short break from the summer heat is over. A fresh heatwave is building across the country, with temperatures set to rise from today. It peaka on Friday, 28 August, when eight cities will be under red alert.
Where the heat will be worse
Health risk alerts — the highest level, indicating danger even for healthy people — will be in force on Friday in Bari, Cagliari, Campobasso, Catania, Latina, Messina, Palermo, Reggio Calabria and Rome.
A further nine cities will be on orange alert, meaning possible negative effects on the health of more vulnerable residents: Ancona, Bologna, Civitavecchia, Florence, Frosinone, Perugia, Pescara, Rieti and Viterbo.
Central and northern Italy will largely escape the worst of it, with most cities there on yellow or green alert. Bolzano, Brescia, Genoa, Naples, Venice and Verona have been issued pre-alerts, while Milan, Turin and Trieste face no risk at all, remaining on green through to 28 August.
The monitoring system currently covers 27 Italian cities.
