News

Filippo Turetta, sentenced to life in prison for killing Giulia Cecchettin, was attacked by another inmate in Verona prison.

Newspaper L’Arena reported the August assault at Montorio prison. A 55-year-old prisoner punched Turetta. The attacker is serving a final sentence for murder and attempted murder. Days before, he had voiced anger at Turetta’s presence in the unit.

He was placed in solitary confinement for 15 days. Later, he was moved to a single cell, where he began a hunger and medication strike to protest conditions.

Turetta is preparing to appeal his life sentence.

Giulia Cecchettin’s father, Gino, condemned the prison assault. “Violence is not the answer,” he said during the Pordenonelegge festival. “I’m not happy that Turetta was attacked, because once again it means we have to work. These acts should be condemned. The feelings that lead to this are wrong,” he added.

Giulia Cecchettin’s murder

Giulia Cecchettin’s murder shocked Italy in 2023. Turetta admitted to stabbing Cecchettin, 22, to death at Fossò, near Venice, on November 11, 2023. He stabbed her 75 times. It was just days before she was due to graduate from Padua University in biomedical engineering.

Her body was found at Val Caltea, near Lake Barcis in Friuli, on November 18, 2023. Turetta, her ex-boyfriend, who was doing the same course, went on the run after dumping the body. He was tracked down to the side of a road near Leipzig, Germany after he ran out of money and his car ran out of petrol, a week after the murder.
