At an awards ceremony where Italian cuisine and culture was top billing, Italy came out tops for gastronomy in the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2023.

Most Desirable Country for Gastronomy – Gold for Italy

As Wanderlust magazine stated, this is “a cuisine that really needs no introduction. We may attempt to recreate Italy’s world-famous pasta and pizza dishes at home, but there truly is no place to experience its culinary offerings than in the country itself. Most regions, cities, and even remote villages have their own origin story for a dish.”

Italy garnering silver may come as a surprise for a country which is on just about everybody’s bucket list. First place went to France.

As we know, Italy is crammed full of history, traditions, beliefs, customs, works of art, rituals, and ceremonies. From the Sicilian Tarantella to the Prosecco of Veneto and the sculptures of Bernini in Rome, richly deserving its second place.

Most Desirable Country in Europe – Bronze for Italy

Italy has a rich mix of history, art, and amazing food. So, what makes it desirable? Ancient ruins, Renaissance wonders, and charming villages where you can indulge in top-notch cuisine. Meet the locals in lively street scenes, and enjoy the stunning scenery of coastlines and mountainsides. Whether you’re into art, wine, or history, Italy has something for every traveller, which explains why it took bronze for most desirable country in Europe.

Most Desirable Island in Europe – Bronze for Sicily

Sicily - street architecture

Sicily’s diverse appeal, rich in history and with a unique culture, is why travellers ranked it in third place as most desirable island in Europe. Showcasing ancient Greek temples, Roman theatres, and medieval architecture, the island’s blends influences from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, evident in its language, cuisine, and traditions.  The Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards certainly recognised the island’s USP.
