Tajani condemns attack on UNIFIL as Italian MPs join Gaza flotilla

News

Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned on Wednesday what UNIFIL described as one of the most serious attacks on its mission in Lebanon since last November. Meanwhile, 4 opposition MPs join the Gaza flotilla.

The peacekeeping force said Israel Defense Forces (IDF) drones dropped four grenades close to UN personnel clearing roadblocks. One exploded within 20 metres of peacekeepers and vehicles.

Posting on X after meeting U.S. presidential adviser on Middle Eastern affairs Massad Boulos, Tajani wrote: “We condemn the attacks on the #UNIFIL mission, which works to ensure security and stability of Lebanon.”

Italy contributes over 1,000 troops to the mission.

Italian lawmakers join global Gaza Flotilla

Meanwhile, four opposition lawmakers announced they will join the Global Sumud Flotilla, which plans to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Maria Elena Delia, spokeswoman of the Italian delegation, said MEP Benedetta Scuderi of the Green-Left Alliance, PD MP Arturo Scotto, PD MEP Annalisa Corrado and Senator Marco Croatti of the Five Star Movement will take part.
“They’ve decided to put their bodies on the line,” Delia said. “You can imagine how important this is.”

The flotilla, the largest grass-roots mission of its kind, will set sail on Sunday after a delay caused by bad weather.

Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein called on the Italian government and the EU to defend the flotilla. This follows minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s warning that Israel would seize vessels and treat passengers as terrorism suspects.

She accused the Netanyahu government of crimes against the Palestinian people and said her party would stand by the activists.
