Matteo Berrettini is out of the Australian Open 2025. The world No. 34 was defeated in four sets by Denmark’s Holger Rune (world No. 13).
Berrettini lost the first set in a tie-break 6-7 (3-7) but bounced back to win the second set 6-2. Rune, however, claimed the third set 6-3 and narrowly won the fourth set in a tightly contested tie-break.
Berrettini had beaten Brit Cameron Norrie in the first round 6-7 6-4 6-1 6-3. He didn’t drop a single service game throughout the match and with 32 aces to his name.
Musetti in third round
Lorenzo Musetti became the first Italian to reach the third round of the Australian Open 2025. The 22-year-old from Carrara, ranked No. 15 in the world, battled through three sets against 25-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov (world No. 56), winning the first two sets in tie-breaks and dominating the final set for a 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 victory.
In the post-match press conference, Musetti said he was happy with his win. “I’m very happy, very satisfied not only for having reached the third round, but above all for the way in which I achieved it.
“They were two tough rounds and today, even if I didn’t play my best, it was important to always stay close to my opponent and try to push him to his limit.”
Musetti will face 22-year-old American Ben Shelton (world No. 21) in the next round, following Shelton’s win over Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta (world No. 182).
“Now Shelton and I will face each other for the first time in a slam but we know each other well, and it will not be an easy round. He has excellent qualities, an excellent serve and the key will be to try to break down his game.
“I have to get him into the exchange, the part I like the most, and take control of the game, extend the exchanges and always be proactive”.
Fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego joins Musetti in the third round.Sonego defeated Brazilian Joao Fonseca in 5 sets.
At the time of writing, Jannik Sinner (men’s world no. 1) is tied at one set all against Australian Tristan Schoolkate (no. 173). This is the first set sinner has dropped after 29 consecutive winning sets.
Bronzetti out
Lucia Bronzetti’s Australian Open run ended in the second round. The Italian, ranked No. 76, lost to Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian (world No. 82) with a scoreline of 7-5, 7-5. This was their fifth meeting, with Bronzetti having won only once previously. Cristian will face Germany’s Eva Lys in the third round, marking her first time reaching this stage in a Grand Slam.
