A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his former partner to death in Castelnuovo del Garda, near Verona.
Prosecutors said the suspect, Reis Pedroso, a Brazilian national, had removed an electronic tag that prevented him from approaching the victim. The tag had been imposed after his arrest in April for a previous assault on the same woman.
The stabbing victim, Jessica Stapazzolo Custodio de Lima, 33, also from Brazil, was found dead overnight. Prosecutors said she suffered “an unspecified but enormous number of stab wounds.”
After the killing, Pedroso reportedly called the Carabinieri, saying he wanted to take his own life.
Italy continues to grapple with gender-based violence. In July, the Senate unanimously approved a bill introducing femicide as a specific crime under Italian law. The measure, now before the Lower House for final approval, mandates life imprisonment for anyone who kills a woman due to hatred, discrimination, or an intent to suppress her rights or freedom.
The bill also limits prison benefits for those convicted of femicide and strengthens education and awareness programmes against gender violence.
