PM Giorgia Meloni attended Donald Trump’s inauguration as 47th President of the United States of America. Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani emphasised the importance of the United States in promoting peace in the Middle East during an event in Italy.
Speaking via video link from Jerusalem at the “Agenda for Peace 2025” conference, organised by the European Parliament in Italy, Tajani acknowledged the roles both Donald Trump and Joe Biden played in facilitating a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
“I hope the US will be a protagonist and promoter of peace,” Tajani stated. “It seems both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have applied significant pressure to expedite the signing of a ceasefire agreement with Hamas.”
Tajani also touched upon the issue of immigration, noting it remains a separate challenge for the United States. His comments came as the inauguration ceremony for Donald Trump’s second term as US President was underway in Washington, DC.

Meloni – only European leader at Trump inauguration
Premier Giorgia Meloni attended the inauguration, where she was seated next to Argentina’s President Javier Milei in the Capitol Rotunda. Accompanied by key officials, including Palazzo Chigi’s diplomatic advisor Fabrizio Saggio and Italy’s ambassador to Washington Mariangela Zappia, Meloni underscored the significance of Italy-US relations.
In a social media post, Meloni congratulated Trump and expressed optimism for the continued strength of bilateral ties. “Enjoy your work, President Donald J. Trump, as you begin your new mandate,” she wrote. “I am confident that the friendship between our nations and our shared values will continue to enhance cooperation, addressing global challenges and fostering prosperity and security for our people.”
Meloni reiterated Italy’s commitment to strengthening dialogue between the United States and Europe, describing it as crucial for the stability and growth of their communities. Her presence at Trump’s inauguration aimed to reaffirm and bolster the relationship between Italy and the US.
“Italy has a robust and enduring relationship with the United States,” Meloni stated. “In these times of global interconnected challenges, it is vital to demonstrate our intent to continue and strengthen this partnership.” She also participated in a religious service with Trump at St John’s Church prior to the inauguration.
Meloni was the sole European head of government at the event. Following the ceremony, she departed Washington, DC, at midnight Italian time.
