Italy continues to swelter under intense heat, with 16 cities on red alert today, down slightly from 21 yesterday. The red alert level signals maximum risk from high temperatures for the entire population, not just vulnerable groups.
The cities under highest alert today include Bologna, Bolzano, Brescia, Florence, Perugia, and Turin. They have endured red-level warnings since 26 June, with the streak expected to continue at least until 2 July.
Other cities facing maximum risk today are Ancona, Frosinone, Genoa, Latina, Milan, Palermo, Rieti, Rome, Trieste, and Verona.
The number of cities on red alert is expected to rise again, reaching 17 tomorrow as Viterbo joins the list, and 18 on Wednesday with Campobasso added.
While red alerts have dipped slightly, the number of orange-level cities — signalling high risk for vulnerable populations — has increased to four: Campobasso, Naples, Venice, and Viterbo. Genoa, previously orange, is now red.
Yellow alerts (pre-warning of a possible heatwave) now affect seven cities: Bari, Cagliari, Catania, Civitavecchia, Messina, Pescara, and Reggio Calabria.
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor conditions closely and urges residents, especially the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses, to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
