Google reveals Italy’s top search trends of 2025

News

Google has released its annual breakdown of Italian search trends in 2025, highlighting a year shaped by music competitions, sporting success, cultural moments and global crises.

The report tracks terms that saw the sharpest rise in searches, offering a snapshot of public attention.

Most searched people

The most searched person in Italy this year was Lucio Corsi. The Tuscan singer reached second place at Sanremo and later represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest. His Sanremo entry, Volevo essere un duro, topped the rankings for most searched song. Corsi also led the list of most searched singers.

Olly ranked second across all three categories. He won Sanremo but declined to appear at the Eurovision, a choice that generated considerable online interest. Tennis player Lorenzo Musetti was third after reaching sixth place in the ATP rankings, his best career result.

Model Bianca Balti placed fourth following public interest in her account of cancer treatment and the depression that followed. In fifth place was Jasmine Paolini, who won both the singles and doubles titles at the Rome International Championships and finished the season eighth in the WTA rankings.

One notable absence from the top ten was Jannik Sinner, who topped search trends in 2023.

Public interest surged following the deaths of several well-known figures. Searches increased sharply after the passing of Pope Francis, television host Pippo Baudo, fashion designer Giorgio Armani, American activist Charlie Kirk and actress Eleonora Giorgi.

Why?

Questions starting with “Why?” dominated many of the year’s search trends. Users sought explanations for Israel’s attack on Iran, the latest bombing of Gaza and the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Tehran. Other widely searched questions centred on artificial intelligence, the Hollywood fires, reforms to the careers of judges and prosecutors, the 2007 Garlasco murder case and Olly’s decision to refuse Eurovision.

The election of Pope Leo XIV also triggered high search activity. Many users asked why he chose his papal name and what “Augustinian” meant.

Food searches

Food searches reflected seasonal habits. Casatiello, the Neapolitan savoury bread, was the most searched dish. It was followed by Easter Colomba cake and “Uova alla Jova”, an egg recipe made popular by singer Jovanotti. One of the most common queries during Carnevale was how to make chiacchiere.

In the Come si fa..? (How do you…?) section, Come si fa il porridge? (How do you make porridge? was the top search.

Entertainment

In cinema, Conclave stood out after its release shortly before the death of Pope Francis. The most searched television series was Monster: The Ed Gein Story, followed by Squid Game and Adolescence. Other popular searches included How to Train Your Dragon, Superman and The Monster of Florence.

Google’s data paints a picture of a year in which Italians turned to music, sport and entertainment for escape, while global politics and domestic justice issues continued to shape public debate.
