Forest fire continues in Val Venosta

By Region News North-east Italy

The forest above Prato allo Stelvio remains ablaze. Over 400 firefighters have worked since yesterday to control it. Drought and winds have been hampering efforts to control the forest fire in Val Venosta.

The terrain is remote and difficult to access, complicating firefighting efforts. Helicopters resumed water drops at dawn this morning.

Supplying water remains one of the biggest challenges. Crews must transport it from distant sources to reach the flames. The forest fire in Val Venosta has already affected around 100 hectares of forest. Authorities have not yet brought it under control.

The Civil Protection Department has kept its warning active for the nearby towns of Stelvio, Trafoi and Prato. Residents should keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation systems to avoid inhaling smoke from the fire. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised people in the area to remain alert.

Meteorologist Dieter Peterlin said the region has not seen rain since 23 March, making drought the key challenge.

The Venosta Valley, known for its apples, is one of the driest Alpine valleys due to its surrounding peaks. Mountains such as Ortles, Gran Zebrù and the border ridge block much of the incoming rain. To support agriculture, locals historically built ‘Waale’, ancient channels that still transport glacial water to fields and orchards.

Fire crews are also contending with the ‘Vinschger Wind’, a strong afternoon thermal wind from the Resia Pass.

Last month, a forest fire in nearby Laces burned for a full week due to wind and dry conditions. In 2023, estimates put 60,000 hectares lost to wild fires.
