Flamur Sula, the father of Ilaria Sula, firmly rejected the apology offered by Mark Samson, the man accused of killing his daughter.
“There are no excuses. There are no excuses and I am not interested in what he wrote. He wasted his time,” he told journalists today at the office of his lawyer, Giuseppe Sforza.
Samson, aged 23, is accused of the femicide of Ilaria, a student from Terni. He recently submitted a letter of apology, which the family dismissed.
“We didn’t expect the letter at this time,” said Ilaria’s father. “Maybe in 30 or 40 years but not now.”
Referring to the letter, he added, “He says he’s crying, but we’ve been crying for our daughter for 20 days. Ilaria didn’t deserve this end. She was wonderful and it’s not hard not to forget her. The city of Terni and Italy can’t take it. There are no excuses.”
Flamur Sula described the act as a betrayal: “It was a betrayal. If I love someone, I don’t just kill them and then say I love them.”
He also recalled a conversation with the accused. “I asked Mark, that murderer, ‘do you have anything to do with this story that Ilaria disappeared?’ He replied ‘I love Ilaria… I would never hurt her’. But instead he had done it to her.”
“A mother cannot help a son hide a corpse”
Ilaria’s mother, Gezime, also addressed the press, directing her words toward Samson’s mother.
“That’s not a mother, a mother like her should not exist,” she said, lowering her gaze. “A mother cannot help a son hide a corpse, hide our daughter. I don’t know what kind of heart she has. I don’t know…”
The parents spoke about the final messages sent from Ilaria’s phone.
“What did you want to think? That it wasn’t her, it wasn’t Ilaria,” they said. “Because if it was her,” added the father, “whatever she had done, for better or for worse, she would have told us. She would have called us, not sent a message or a story on Instagram. He knew all the codes.”
“Ilaria was a strong girl who had many dreams,” her mother said again.
