Florence’s Vasari Corridor has regained its artistic spirit with the addition of several Roman busts from the Uffizi Gallery. This brings new life to the historic walkway which has been empty since it reopened last year.
The 50+ statues, featuring emperors and intellectuals such as Cicero, Augustus, Commodus, Sabina (consort of Hadrian), and Faustina (wife of Antoninus Pius), now line the section of the corridor that passes above the iconic Ponte Vecchio.
Built in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari, the one-kilometre-long elevated corridor was designed to allow the ruling Medici family to move discreetly and safely between Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti. It connects some of Florence’s most important landmarks, passing through the Uffizi and across the Arno River via the Ponte Vecchio.
Since its reopening in December 2024, the corridor has remained largely empty. Once filled with Renaissance masterpieces, the space had become a shadow of its former self. It drew criticism for its bare, sterile appearance.
That has now changed.
“The placement of these busts marks an important step in restoring the historical and cultural integrity of the corridor,” said a spokesperson for the Uffizi Galleries.
Closed to the public in 2016 for safety upgrades, the corridor underwent extensive refurbishment. Improvements included a new lighting system, air conditioning, and full accessibility for visitors.
