Italy’s Prime Minister announced the preparation of Italy’s own AI Law in a video at the conference “Artificial intelligence for Italy”.
Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday the government was preparing its own law to regulate Artificial Intelligence. She said it would be complementary to the EU AI Act. Furthermore, there would also be a one-billion-euro investment fund for the sector.
“The government is preparing a law that aims to establish some principles and set rules that are complementary to the European regulation that is in the process of being approved and identify the most effective measures to stimulate our productive capabilities,” Meloni said in a video message to a conference on ‘Artificial intelligence for Italy’.
“We are also working to identify the most suitable body to act as the competent authority for the use of technologies based on artificial intelligence”.
Meloni said that State lender CDP’s Venture Capital unit are creating a one-billion-euro investment fund for AI.
“The Italian system needs to start with the great champions of this nation and for this I want to thank Cdp – and in particular Cdp Venture Capital – because thanks to their commitment it will be possible to invest a billion euros in AI, both by creating a new investment fund specialized investment in AI, both using investment funds that are already active but involve this technology”, added the Prime Minister.
Italy is currently investigating a new OpenAI tool Sora, regarding data protection. The Italian DPA has also said ChatGPT violates data protection regulations. The authority initially banned the AI tool for this very reason.
