Two women have died after a hit-and-run while crossing the road in Naples, in the area of Porta Nolana, police said.

The victims, believed to be Ukrainian nationals, were hit on a pedestrian crossing by a Mercedes driven by a 34-year-old man from Naples. The collision occurred in a poorly lit stretch of road, according to initial reports from local authorities.

One of the women died at the scene. The second was in critical condition when transported to Ospedale del Mare, where she died shortly afterwards.

Car crashed into parked vehicles

After striking the pedestrians, the vehicle continued for several metres before crashing into three parked cars, causing extensive damage. All vehicles involved have been seized as part of the investigation.

Officers from the Carabinieri and Naples municipal police cordoned off the area to carry out technical surveys aimed at reconstructing the speed of the vehicle and the exact dynamics of the crash.

The driver was stopped at the scene and taken to a medical facility for alcohol and drug tests. This is standard procedure in fatal road accidents. Authorities said identification procedures for the victims were ongoing.

Investigators are examining lighting conditions, vehicle speed and road layout in the area as part of the inquiry.
