Although Salgari dreamed of becoming a sailor and exploring distant lands, his career as a navigator was cut short after a brief stint at a maritime academy. This disappointment, however, became a turning point that led him to channel his dreams of adventure into writing.
The birth of a literary career
Salgari’s first serialised novel, *La Tigre della Malesia* (“The Tigers of Malaysia”), was published in 1883 and introduced the world to one of his most famous characters, Sandokan.
