Four Italian universities make top 100 QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024

Four of Italy’s universities and polytechnics made it into the top 100 of the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024. Politecnico di Milano placed highest of the four at no. 47.

The QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024 is their first-ever ranking focused exclusively on European universities.

688 universities are in the overall Europe ranking, with the University of Oxford in first place, closely followed by ETH Zurich.

The QS World University Rankings is the only ranking of its kind to emphasise employability and sustainability. This year, they’ve implemented their largest-ever methodological enhancement, introducing three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes and International Research Network.

Italy’s Top Universities

The highest ranking of Italy’s universities and polytechincs is Politecnico di Milano. Ranking at number 47, it scores 76.1/100.

QS describes the polytechnic as “one the most outstanding technical universities in Europe, and the largest Italian university in Engineering, Architecture and Design, with over 47,500 students.”

The university has seven campuses in Milan and other nearby Italian cities: Lecco, Cremona, Mantova, and Piacenza. It enters as 123 in the World rankings. It also offers innovative programmes at all academic levels. Almost the entire postgraduate academic offer is taught in English, thus attracting an ever-increasing number of international students, coming from more than 100 countries. 

Sapienza University of Rome, the largest University in Europe, comes in with a ranking of 65, and a score of 72.3/100. It comes =134th in the world rankings. Its mission is to contribute to the development of a knowledge society through research, excellence, quality education and international cooperation.

Next for Italy is Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, the oldest university in the Western world. Its European ranking is 78, with a score of 69.3/100. It offers its students a varied course catalogue tailored to the needs of present-day society: over 250 degree programmes within its 31 departments and 5 schools.  It is =154th in the world university rankings.

University of Padova is the last of the Italian universities within the top 100 in Europe, ranking at 89 with a score of 65.8/100. Founded in 1222, it is a world-leading research university – best Italian university for the quality of research results (ANVUR). It is also among the best European universities for the number of the top 10% most frequently cited publications.

The University boasts among its scholars and professors Galileo Galilei and Elena L. Cornaro-Piscopia.
