Giorgia Meloni said on Friday that Italy could consider increasing its military presence in Greenland within a NATO framework. Meloni spoke to reporters at the end of an official visit to Tokyo. She said any Italian involvement would take place as part of NATO, according to ANSA.

Meloni stressed that European participation in the Danish-led exercise Operation Arctic Endurance should not be seen as a move against the United States. Meloni said the issue concerns “assuming one’s responsibilities” in a region that has long been underestimated. She also called for greater commitment from all allied countries.

Furthermore, Meloni urged coordination among partners and warned against acting in a fragmented way. She added that she considers a direct military ground intervention in the area very difficult.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has drawn renewed attention due to its strategic location and natural resources. The island has also become a focus of concern over increased Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic region.

Denmark and Greenland have both rejected proposals to sell the territory. They have reaffirmed Danish sovereignty over the island. Several European countries have stepped up their presence through military exercises and reconnaissance missions.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said Greenland should be “in the hands of the US” to counter Russian and Chinese influence.
