Meloni warns of “Barbaric” Political Climate

Rome, 8 October 2025 — Premier Giorgia Meloni said Italy’s political climate is becoming “increasingly barbaric” after receiving repeated death threats. Speaking on Cinque Minuti on Rai TV on Tuesday evening, Meloni said she had “lost count” of the threats against her.

“Italy has already been through this,” she warned, referring to past periods of political violence. How Meloni’s government deals with this political climate is for future analysis.

The premier said she, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani had been reported to the International Criminal Court for alleged complicity in genocide in Gaza.

“I now believe there is no other case in the world or in history of such a charge,” she added.

Meloni also addressed recent pro-Palestinian demonstrations, saying some protesters had openly praised Hamas. “The violence was organised and pre-planned. Not by those who organised the marches but as part of a broader phenomenon,” she said.

“One of the leading banners praised the terror of October 7th,” she continued. “When those who praise Hamas terrorism are allowed to lead the march, perhaps the theory of simple infiltrators is a bit reductive.”

Meloni stressed that she respected peaceful demonstrators but condemned the use of extremist messages. “I see so many things we’re starting to take for granted, and they’re not,” she said.

The premier added that those accusing her and the government of having “blood on their hands” over Gaza share responsibility for fuelling hostility.

“I no longer count the death threats, I don’t even have time to report them,” she said. “There are responsibilities for those who say we are complicit in genocide.”
