Rome, 10 September 2025 – Italy has strongly condemned both Russia’s incursions of Polish airspace and Israel’s strikes on Qatar.
Premier Giorgia Meloni said Italy stood firmly with Poland after Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that Russian drones entered the country’s airspace overnight.
“On behalf of the Italian Government, I express full solidarity with Poland following Russia’s serious and unacceptable violation of Polish and NATO airspace,” Meloni said.
She added that Italy would continue to work for Europe’s security, beginning with Ukraine, and push for a just peace.
Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also condemned the incursion.
“I strongly condemn the violation of Polish territory by Russian drones: a very serious and unacceptable act, which is an offence to the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic area,” he said on X.
Tajani stressed that Italy stood with Poland and all NATO allies, adding that provocations must be firmly rejected by a united Europe.
NATO response
According to Reuters, Italian aircraft were among NATO forces scrambled after the incursions Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, and Italian AWACS surveillance and refuelling aircraft took part in the operation. NATO sources said the incursion was not treated as an attack but as a deliberate act.
Middle East stance
Meloni also reacted to Tuesday’s Israeli air strikes on Doha, which targeted Hamas political leaders. She said Italy opposed escalation in the Middle East.
“On my own behalf and that of the Italian Government, I express sincere closeness to the Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and to Qatar, reiterating Italy’s support for all efforts to put an end to the war in Gaza,” Meloni said on X.
“Italy remains opposed to any form of escalation that could lead to a further worsening of the crisis in the Middle East.”
