Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti will meet in an all-Italian quarter-final at the US Open after crushing their opponents on Monday.
World number one Sinner demolished Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in just 81 minutes. The reigning champion broke his opponent’s serve eight times and dropped only three games.
Tenth seed Musetti was equally dominant, sweeping aside Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0, 6-1.
“Italian tennis is in great shape and Lorenzo is one of the best,” Sinner said. “From the Italian point of view, it’s wonderful to know there will be an Italian in the semi-finals.”
It is the first time two Italian men will contest a Grand Slam quarter-final against each other. Sinner leads Musetti 2-0 in previous meetings at majors.
Sinner showed some vulnerability in the third round, when Denis Shapovalov pushed him to four sets. But against Bublik, he was ruthless. The Kazakh had not lost serve all tournament. However, Sinner broke him immediately and he never recovered.
Musetti, 23, is enjoying his best run at the US Open. He has lost only one set in four matches.
“This is a great moment for Italian tennis,” Sinner said. “Lorenzo is one of the biggest talents we have in the sport. I’m looking forward to the match.”
The winner will secure a place in the semi-finals. Sinner recently lost to Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati due to a virus, but appears to be fully fit.
