A fresh wave of cyberattacks, launched by pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16) on Wednesday, marks the third consecutive day of attacks on Italian institutions.
Targets included banks, arms manufacturers, and public transport companies.
Among those affected were Mediobanca, Nexi, Benelli, Fiocchi, and Danieli. As in previous attacks, which disrupted the websites of government ministries, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, airports, and port authorities, the group used distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. These cyberattacks by pro-Russian hackers flood sites with access requests, making them temporarily unreachable.
Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency stepped in to alert affected companies and assist in restoring services.
Noname057(16) linked Monday’s attack to President Sergio Mattarella’s recent remarks comparing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the actions of the Third Reich. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that Mattarella’s comments would not go “without consequences.”
