Siena Express vintage rail service to run from Rome

News Travel & Tourism

Treinitalia launches the Siena Express, a vintage rail service between Rome and Siena this autumn, offering what organisers describe as a slow-paced journey “into the soul of Tuscany”.

The Espresso Siena will run on three weekends: 27–28 September, 4–5 October and 1–2 November. The train departs Roma Termini at 07.42 on Saturdays, arriving in Siena at 13.20. The return leg leaves Siena at 15.05 on Sundays. Tickets start at €29.

Passengers will travel on restored Gran Confort carriages, designed in the 1970s for Europe’s Trans Europ Express routes and recently brought back into service by the FS Italiane Foundation. The coaches feature wide reclining seats, panoramic windows and a bar service.

The journey takes in the Maremma coastline, Argentario and Val d’Orcia areas, with stops including Tarquinia, Capalbio, Orbetello, Grosseto, Montepescali, Monte Antico, Buonconvento and Monteroni d’Arbia.

FS Treni Turistici Italiani said the service aims to let travellers “slow down, connect deeply with the landscape and savour the most authentic essence of the region”.

What’s happening onboard?

Refurbished from 1970s Trans Europ Express stock, these coaches offer lush comfort – reclining velvet or leather seats, wide aisles, air conditioning, panoramic double-glazed windows and refined finishes. The FS Italiane Foundation painstakingly preserved their elegance and quiet operation.
