Opera del Duomo Museum in Florence to Expand

By Region Central Italy News Travel & Tourism

The Opera del Duomo Museum, one of Florence’s most treasured cultural landmarks, is set to undergo a major transformation. The Florence City Council has approved an ambitious plan to integrate the historic Palazzo Compagni into the museum, nearly doubling its size.

This expansion follows the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore’s acquisition of Palazzo Compagni in February 2023 for approximately €10 million. The museum, which currently spans 6,000 square meters. It cost €45million to build, will gain an additional 5,000 square meters. The expansion is expected to be completed within four years.

Preserving History While Embracing Modernity

Palazzo Compagni, formerly housing an INAIL office, had no historical preservation restrictions. It was also at risk of being converted into short-term tourist rentals. Instead, Florence has chosen to prioritize culture by incorporating the building into the Opera del Duomo Museum’s footprint.

The project, led by Urban Planning Councillor Caterina Biti, involves demolishing the structurally unsound parts of the building and constructing a modern structure in its place. The new design will maintain the building’s original height but feature contemporary additions, including a redesigned roof with a terrace and covered area. Plans also propose linking the new terrace with Palazzo Compagni’s rooftop, offering visitors breathtaking views of Brunelleschi’s iconic dome.

The expansion will include a range of new features, such as a conference room, a café with a garden, and enhanced visitor facilities. Despite these changes, the museum’s iconic entrance on Piazza del Duomo will remain unchanged.

A Commitment to Culture

Councillor Biti described the project as “a cultural and social investment of great significance.” She highlighted its dual focus on rehabilitating a historic building and enhancing the museum’s offerings with new spaces for temporary exhibitions, conferences, and visitor services.

Luca Bagnoli, president of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, underscored the importance of the project. “Palazzo Compagni could have been lost to the real estate market, but instead, we are returning it to Florence as a cultural asset. This is a commitment to preserving our history while enhancing our city’s future.”

Guicciardini & Magni Architetti will carry out the design work. They also contributed to the original museum’s structure alongside Adolfo Natalini. Their modern yet sensitive approach aims to blend historical preservation with contemporary innovation, ensuring the museum continues to be a leading cultural institution.

This expansion marks a significant moment for the Opera del Duomo Museum. By combining its historic roots with forward-thinking design, the museum will offer visitors a richer, more immersive experience.
