Removal order: mother and grandmother suspected of abuse

Authorities issued an urgent removal order from the family home with a ban on approaching two children for a mother and grandmother. This after suspected abuse left two young siblings hospitalised in Cosenza.

The children, aged four and two, are in the paediatric surgery department of Annunziata Hospital. Doctors found fractures and injuries suggesting possible beatings. The Paola Public Prosecutor’s Office, led by acting prosecutor Ernesto Sassano, issued an urgent removal order.

The Carabinieri of Paola enforced the order overnight. The women, under investigation for mistreatment and personal injury, cannot approach the children. Social services are now involved, but doctors confirm neither child is in life-threatening condition.

The case began on 19 January when the four-year-old was first hospitalised with rib injuries and a broken collarbone. His mother discharged him against medical advice. On 25 January, he returned to hospital with testicular inflammation.

Last night, Carabinieri visited the family home and found the two-year-old had a previous arm fracture. He was examined at Paola Hospital before being transferred to Cosenza. He remains in paediatric surgery with his brother.

A court-appointed guardian, Dr. Fawzi Shweiki, now oversees the children’s care. Their mother and grandmother deny all mistreatment accusations.
