The Paris summit on Ukraine discussed a possible ceasefire and the role of the United Nations, according to Premier Giorgia Meloni’s office at Palazzo Chigi. The summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, brought together the coalition of the willing.
During the meeting, leaders discussed the importance of effectively implementing and monitoring the ceasefire. A possible role for the United Nations is being explored, in line with the Italian Government’s position, Palazzo Chigi said in a statement following the summit.
Meloni stressed the need to extend the partial ceasefire to civilian infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, with the aim of achieving a total ceasefire.
Reiterating that no national participation is foreseen in any potential military force on the ground, Meloni emphasised the importance of continuing to work with the United States to end the conflict and secure a peace that guarantees Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. She expressed hope that an American delegation would take part in the next coordination meeting.
“The next meeting of the coalition of the willing on Ukraine should involve the United States,” Meloni said after attending the summit.
“It is now important to be able to extend the partial ceasefire to civilian infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals, with the aim of reaching a total ceasefire,” she said during the summit, according to her office.
The Prime Minister reiterated that no national participation is foreseen in a possible military force on the ground.
