Italy is becoming increasingly pet-friendly, with more public transport options allowing pets to travel alongside their owners.
Whether you’re moving around by train, bus, or ferry, it’s essential to understand the rules and guidelines for travelling with pets in Italy.
Trains
Italy’s national railway service, Trenitalia, permits small pets to travel free of charge as long as they are kept in a carrier measuring no more than 70 x 30 x 50 cm. Larger dogs are also allowed but must be leashed and muzzled. They require a second-class ticket at half the fare of a standard adult ticket. During the summer, Trenitalia typically runs special promotions for pet travel, allowing them to board for a reduced fare.
Buses and Trams
Local transport authorities in major cities such as Rome, Milan, and Florence generally allow small pets to travel on buses and trams, provided they are in a carrier. Larger dogs may also be permitted but must wear a muzzle and be kept on a short leash. Ticket prices and rules can vary, so it’s advisable to check with the local transport operator before travelling.
Ferries and Boats
Ferries operating between Italian islands and coastal towns often accommodate pets, though regulations differ by company. On most routes, small pets can travel free in a carrier, while larger dogs may require a ticket and are generally restricted to designated areas on the deck. Passengers should check in advance whether their chosen ferry allows pets in cabins.
Taxis and Ride-Sharing
While most taxi drivers in Italy are accommodating towards pets, it’s best to confirm in advance when booking. Ride-sharing services like Uber may have individual policies regarding pets, so always notify the driver beforehand.
New Pet Travel Legislation
Recently, Italy expanded its air travel rules, allowing medium-sized and large dogs to travel in the cabin with their owners. This aligns with broader efforts to make public transport more accessible to pets, ensuring they can accompany their owners comfortably and safely.
