Meloni urges Iran nuclear talks and Gaza ceasefire at G7

Premier Giorgia Meloni has called for renewed negotiations to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power at the G7, warning of the risk of escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking at the close of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Meloni said, “The objective we all want is to get to negotiations that make it possible for Iran not to become a nuclear power.”

The premier acknowledged that previous diplomatic efforts had failed but expressed hope for renewed talks. “We are heading towards an escalation,” she said. “We know there is a threat, and we must work to defuse it.”

Meloni also addressed the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine. She said the time had come to push for a ceasefire in Gaza, noting that her efforts had led to a reference to the conflict in the summit’s final declaration. “I have worked hard on this,” she said. “I think it is the right time, with the appropriate pressure, to reach a ceasefire.”

On the issue of possible mediation between Iran and Israel, Meloni ruled out Russian involvement. “No one would accept Putin as a mediator,” she said. “The option is not on the table.”

The premier also condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, criticising the continued attacks on civilians. “Every time we try to take a step forward, Russia responds with provocation,” she said.

Meloni met with US President Donald Trump on Monday, shortly before he left the summit early. According to her office, the two leaders discussed the Iran crisis and agreed on the need to reopen negotiations. They also spoke about the situation in Gaza, EU-US trade relations, and the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague.
