Two people remain unaccounted for after a landslide destroyed a house in Brazzano di Cormons during intense overnight rain.
Firefighters reached the site of the landslide within minutes and pulled one survivor from the rubble. The injured person suffered a broken leg and reached Udine hospital soon after rescue. Authorities declared a regional state of emergency on Monday as storms caused widespread flooding and disruption across Friuli Venezia Giulia. Rivers rose rapidly during the night as rain intensified across low-lying towns. The Torre river burst its banks in nearby Romans d’Isonzo and forced residents onto rooftops as water swept through streets. Emergency teams evacuated hundreds of people as conditions worsened.
Civil Protection Chief Riccardo Riccardi described a difficult situation. He said the region must find shelter for 300 displaced residents within hours. Local mayors opened gyms and public buildings to provide heated spaces and meals for evacuees. Riccardi said forecasts had suggested heavy rain but not the scale of the damage now visible across the region.
Storm alerts currently cover six Italian regions, including Emilia Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy, Tuscany and Umbria. Weather services expect further rainfall, and emergency teams remain on standby as rescue work continues in the worst-hit areas.
