MOSE barrier which prevented high tide flooding in Venice

MOSE saves Venice from high tide flooding

By Region Environment News North-east Italy

Bad weather plagues central-northern Italy, with the MOSE ‘saving’ Venice from high tide flooding and Triestino ending up under water.

Rain and wind also hit Tuscany and Veneto, while the waterways between Reggiano and Parma are under special surveillance.

For tomorrow, the Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert for hydraulic risk in Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Veneto. The unseasonal October will give way to torrential rains on Monday. Over the weekend, the sun will show its face again.

Meteorological instability hits Italy

Today Venice recorded yet another exceptional high tide, which was contained by the MOSE flood barriers.

In the open sea, the water reached 150 centimetres, while the city remained dry. The new ‘train’ of high waters, however, will likely remain. According to the weather maps, favourable conditions for the phenomenon remain at least until October 31st, with continuous and very rapid changes in pressure and alternating low and high pressure.

The high tide flooding instead hit the Trieste coast, with Muggia waking up this morning submerged by 15 centimetres of water with strong gusts of wind. Furthermore, a strong sea storm destroyed a bathing establishment located a hundred meters from Miramare Castle.

Rain and hail then hit Tuscany, in particular the areas of Lucca, Pistoia, Massa Carrara, Arezzo, Amiata and Florence. In 24 hours, said the governor, Eugenio Giani, up to 200 millimetres of rain fell in the areas of Lunigiana, Alta Garfagnana and the Apennines, “what falls on average in a month”. Giani particularly criticises the situation on the border between Tuscany and Liguria, where rivers and streams have for some moments exceeded the thresholds of the historical highs of the last ten years.

Storms and rain also hit the La Spezia area, where the wind reached up to 150 kilometres per hour. The red alert was then triggered in Emilia-Romagna due to the flooding of the rivers in the areas of Reggio Emilia and Parma, swollen by overnight rainfall.

In the Bergamo area, a landslide about a kilometre from the town centre left the 120 inhabitants of the small town of Brumano isolated. In Fabriano, in the province of Ancona, the mayor closed city parks and a municipal gym due to strong gusts of wind. Finally, a strong storm hit the Lazio coast, with waves that reached two and a half metres in height.
