Italy has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took part by video link in a meeting of leaders from the Coalition of the Willing for Kyiv.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the prime minister’s office at Palazzo Chigi said the government “renews its solidarity and closeness to the Ukrainian institutions and people” on the anniversary of what it described as Russia’s “unjustified and brutal aggression”.

The statement said that over the past four years of Ukraine’s struggle “to defend its freedom and independence”, Italy has provided “constant and convinced support”, working alongside its European and Western allies.

Rome also reiterated its backing for diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict. “Italy determinedly contributes to international efforts to promote a just and lasting peace,” the statement said, adding that the government supports and accompanies the negotiation process promoted by the United States.

Italy is participating in the Coalition of the Willing’s discussions on defining “solid security guarantees for Ukraine”, the note added, underlining its continued engagement at both political and strategic levels.

To mark the anniversary, the main façade of Palazzo Chigi in Rome was illuminated in the blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag until 23:59 on Tuesday, in a symbolic gesture of solidarity.

Italy has provided financial and humanitarian assistance to Kyiv since the start of the invasion in February 2022, and has consistently aligned itself with European Union and NATO partners in backing sanctions against Moscow and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
