Italy Stresses Pragmatic Climate Action at COP29

Environment News

Premier Giorgia Meloni, speaking at COP29 in Baku, stated Italy’s commitment to tackling climate change through a pragmatic approach.

Speaking at COP29, Meloni highlighted the ambitious goals set at COP28 in Dubai, emphasising that reaching them requires global cooperation, particularly from major greenhouse gas emitters and with sufficient financial backing. “Achieving a valuable compromise requires shared responsibility and bridging gaps between developed and emerging economies,” she stressed.

Italy already allocates much of its €4 billion climate fund to Africa and supports initiatives such as the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund. However, Meloni insisted that decarbonisation must consider the sustainability of “our production and social systems.”

“We must protect nature with men at its core. An approach that is too ideological and not pragmatic risks to take us off the road to success.”

She warned that overly ideological approaches could hinder success, advocating instead for a realistic energy transition. “We need a balanced energy mix to support the transition process,” she said, adding that all available technologies must be used.

Saying while no alternative to fossil fuels exists yet, Meloni stressed the importance of balancing energy sources, including renewables, biofuels, and nuclear fusion, which “could provide clean, safe, and limitless energy.”

Meloni noted Italy’s leadership in nuclear fusion, highlighting the first World Fusion Energy Group meeting, organised during Italy’s G7 presidency, to promote this game-changing technology. She called for a “new energy diplomacy” to increase cooperation between the global north and south.
