Children kept in school due to torrential rain

News North-west Italy

Children were kept in school near Savona on Wednesday as widespread flooding affected the area due to torrential rain.

Streets and basements flooded in the municipalities of Calice Ligure and Celle Ligure. The mayor of Celle, Marco Beltrame, issued a yellow alert for storms and urged teachers to keep children on the first floor of the school until further notice.

“Let’s pretend to be on red alert because the situation is quite serious,” said Beltrame. “The Ghiare torrent is on pre-alert, a large landslide fell on the Aurelia highway in Celle, and ANAS (the national roads company) has taken action.”

Beltrame also signed an order suspending all teaching activities in Celle for Thursday.

In the province of La Spezia and other municipalities in Liguria, authorities suspended in-person lessons in secondary schools for Thursday. This decision followed the orange weather alert issued by the Ligurian Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (Arpal). The president of the province, Pierluigi Peracchini, signed the decree, saying it aimed to “reduce the risk to students during the alert.”

A red alert for extreme weather, including heavy rain, is in place for Tuscany and Liguria from 2 p.m. on Thursday, according to www.meteoalarm.org
