The centre-left coalition has retained control of Emilia-Romagna and is on track to secure a narrow victory in Umbria. This according to exit polls and projections from regional elections held on Sunday and Monday.
In Emilia-Romagna, centre-left candidate Michele de Pascale is projected to win the governorship with 55% of the vote. In comparison his centre-right rival Elene Ugolini stands at 40%. Pollsters have declared the result a clear win for de Pascale, cementing Emilia-Romagna’s 54-year history as a stronghold for the centre-left.
The race in Umbria is much tighter, with centre-left challenger Stefania Proietti holding a slim lead over incumbent centre-right governor Donatella Tesei. Projections currently place Proietti with 50.1% of the vote, compared to Tesei’s 47.1%.
Post-Election Call for Cooperation
Michele de Pascale, speaking after his victory in Emilia-Romagna became evident, called on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to collaborate on relief and preventive measures following recent catastrophic floods in the region.
“It has been a year and a half of political speculation and clashes,” de Pascale said. “In our land, people are afraid, and businesses are uncertain about their future. Political speculation must end with this election campaign, and a new institutional collaboration for Emilia-Romagna must begin.”
He expressed hope to meet the prime minister soon to initiate a cooperative approach.
Democratic Party Leader Celebrates Victory
Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein hailed the victory in Emilia-Romagna as “emotional and moving,” describing it as a testament to the strength of the centre-left alliance.
“This is a sign of what we can achieve when united and focused on a common goal,” Schlein said, praising de Pascale’s leadership and the cohesion within the party. “The Democratic Party has proven to be the linchpin of the alternative to these right-wing parties.”
Schlein reiterated her confidence in de Pascale, calling him “a great president of Emilia-Romagna” and thanking him for his dedication and passion.
