UNESCO says the historic centre is in danger if cruise ships do not dock at another port. The Italian government announced earlier this year it would ban these ships from the historic centre. The plan was for the ships to divert to the industrial port of Marghera.

Campaigners against cruise ships in Venice protested against the huge vessels docking in the city’s port. Previously, prime minister Mario Draghi’s government declared cruise ships banned from the historic centre.

Abruzzo, Liguria, Umbria and Veneto pass into the white zone from Monday 7th June. This is in addition to Friuli Venezia Giulia, Molise and Sardinia, which passed to the lowest risk band on June 1st.

An Italian judge ruled on Saturday, the three men detained over a cable car crash that killed 14 people in northern Italy could leave prison. However, one of them will be under house arrest.
