Two Italian twin sisters have become unlikely TikTok stars at the age of 83. Known as the Scamp Twins, they have amassed over 30,000 followers.
Maria Pia and Maria Teresa Rossi, known online as the Scamp Twins, live in Casalecchio di Reno near Bologna. Their short, funny videos have gained 30,000 followers and six million likes.
Locals now stop them in the street to greet them as celebrities. They have been featured on television and their videos have been shared by stars including Italo-Argentine showgirl Belén Rodríguez and singer Emma Marrone.
The sisters, both widows, have lived together for four years. They began posting videos on TikTok as a pastime, often dressing in matching outfits for holidays such as Christmas, Easter and Halloween.
“Look how ugly we are… and beautiful,” they joked in one clip while dressed as witches. In another, they posed as Christmas trees in red sweaters and hats.
“We started uploading the videos for fun, for birthdays, or to greet our sister Edda who was ill,” they told Il Resto del Carlino. “Then we saw the videos brought joy to people, and we continued.”
Their fans regularly post messages of admiration. “I hope I’m like you at your age,” wrote one follower.
The twins say they want to inspire others not to give in to loneliness in old age. “You can be cheerful at any age,” they said. “We’ve always had a good relationship, and we give each other strength.”
Asked by news agency ANSA about their secret to staying fit, they replied: “Authenticity, good humour, staying alive by doing things you enjoy. And, of course, a good glass of wine in the evening.”
